Give Thanks

Expressing gratitude to God in every circumstance

Let’s be honest—it’s easy to thank God when the sun is shining, all of our needs and desires of our heart are being met and life is going well but it can be tough to give thanks when we’re in the middle of a storm, when our spirit is weary and we’re facing a difficult trial. In life, there’s a season for joy and a season for weeping but no matter what season we find ourselves in, we are instructed to give thanks to God in all of life’s circumstances. Though our personal situation may change and our attitude along with it, we can confidently rest in the fact that our God stays the same. His love and faithfulness are unchanging, His promises are unbreakable and as His children, we are showered with many blessings, including the greatest gift of eternal life. In Christ, there is so much we can be thankful for.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Throughout the Bible, we see that a thankful heart is pleasing to God and unlocks greater favour and blessing in our life. When we practice gratefulness and offer up our thanks to Him, we remind ourselves afresh of how blessed we truly are. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of focusing on what we don’t have and complaining about it and doing so quenches the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Why should God give us more if we complain about what we already have?

God looks for those who are appreciative of His provision. Through Jesus, we have all we could ever need. He is Jehovah Jireh, our Provider, who never forsakes His children. He knows exactly what we need and the innermost longings of our hearts and while He may not always give us what we want when we want it, we can trust that His ways are bigger, His thoughts are higher and every good and perfect gift comes from Him. In every circumstance, there’s a silver lining—something we can be thankful for if only we realign our mind and heart to search for it. When we do, God begins to reveals our path and leads us in fulfilling His will.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving Day in Canada, may you be encouraged to take some time today and reflect on all the things and people that God has blessed you with in your life and offer a prayer of thankfulness to Him. As Christians, may we get into the habit of focusing our eyes off of ourselves and instead humble ourselves by regularly expressing gratitude to God for all that He has blessed us with. What are you thankful for today? Whether it’s family, friends, a home, running water, food, employment, health or the gift of your salvation that has been made possible through Jesus, thank Him for all that He has done and be hopeful for all the good things that He has in store for you in your future.
