He Cares for the Sparrow

You are of invaluable worth to God!

If you have a basic understanding of economics, you know that in our world’s currency, value is placed on items that are rare and uncommon. The more there is of a particular item, the less value it’s worth. In the first century, birds were a very common item on the open market. Sparrows—the most plentiful of all birds—were a common source of food and the cheapest to purchase. They were so inexpensive, in fact, that they costed only about 50 cents each. Today, there are over a billion sparrows in the world and yet Jesus tells us that not a single one of them is overlooked by the Father.

What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. Matthew 10:29-31

This passage gives us a marvelous glimpse into the wonder and loving heart of God the Father, the Creator who designed every living thing with its own unique design and purpose. He is omnipotent (all-powerful), omnipresent (present everywhere at once) and omniscient (all-knowing) and not a single creature can fall to its death without His consent. God is a god of incredible vastness but also of complex intricacy. The balance of the whole universe is kept in His hands.

So if God cares for a single sparrow, how much more does He care about you? You are His prized creation, the apple of His eye and you are not ever overlooked or forgotten by Him, even though you may feel like you are sometimes. In a world made up of 7.6 billion people, we can easily feel ordinary and insignificant but rest assured that God sees our struggles, knows our needs and lovingly watches over us and supplies us with all that we need.

Isn't it so encouraging to know that even though you're only one of 7.6 people living in the world today, you are actually worth the whole world to God? May you always remember that while you may feel as insignificant as a little sparrow, He sees you and He cares for you, for you are of invaluable worth to Him!
