Prioritizing Time With God

It seems that nowadays, we are busier than ever before. Family, work, school, friends, functions, errands and household chores–sometimes it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get through our never-ending personal to-do list! When we wake up in the morning, oftentimes the first thing that races through our mind is all the things we have to do in the day. If we’re not careful, we can go through our day in a frantic hurry, moving from one task to another, without even so much as acknowledging God and inviting Him into our day. Unfortunately, many of us can get so distracted with the busyness of our lives that we neglect the most important thing–spending time with God.

One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple. Psalm 27:4

David said in Psalm 27 that there was only one thing that he sought after–to dwell in God’s presence. God called David "a man after His own heart." More than anything else, David desired to know God personally, see Him for Who He truly is and simply wanted to be with Him. David had his priorities straight but do we? To know God is really the highest calling we have as His daughters but if you find yourself being “too busy” to pray, worship or read your Bible, the issue is not one of time but of heart posture and priority.

Martha was also “too busy” to enjoy Jesus. When Jesus came to her home, Martha preoccupied herself with trying to be the perfect host that everything else was just right except for her motives. Mary, on the other hand, did what was acceptable in God’s eyes–she seized the opportunity to sit at the feet of Jesus and learn from the Master Himself. Mary recognized the special opportunity it was to be with Jesus and decided to stop what she was doing and work her schedule around Him. Jesus rebuked Martha saying that her sister, Mary had chosen what was most important–to sit in His presence.

Being too busy is not an acceptable excuse for not staying focused on what is really important. The reality is, we all have the same 24 hours in a day to work with but we choose to make time for the people and things that are most important to us. We shouldn't give God our leftovers! Don’t wait until the end of your day when you’re tired and cannot think straight to try and squeeze in some time with Him before going to sleep. God deserves our firstfruits so if He is not getting the best of our time and attention, we need to honestly examine how we spend our time and start making the necessary changes to our routines and commitments to keep God in His rightful place as the first priority in our lives. This may mean cutting out certain leisurely activities that are taking you away from time with God. It may also mean setting better boundaries with people by saying “no” to someone or something that leads you away from His peace.

If God is not on the top of the list of things you seek, move everything around and put it all after Him. The more you spend time with God, the more you’ll find that He enjoys being included in everything that you do. You can invite the Holy Spirit into your day by simply talking to Him and asking Him to direct your steps and empower you for the tasks you need to get done. When you acknowledge His presence and actively partner with Him in prayer, even the most mundane tasks will become more pleasurable and less daunting because He is right there doing them along with you. If you will put God first in everything you do, you will be blessed with His peace and come to find that everything flows better coming from the grace of simply spending time with Him.
